This home is brought to us by South Korean design and building company Hangul House. It looks like an intricately designed architectural home; however, by rationalising the design and restraining the material palette to their catalogue materials with tried and tested application, they are able to produce quick and inexpensive housing solutions.

Hangul House proclaims that they envisage 'homes', not just houses. They seek to produce spaces for living that respond directly to the inhabitants values and needs, to house their most intimate and unique lives.

This particular home occupies a grand area of 515 square metres on an equally generous site – so this large home can't have been all that inexpensive… but is sure is impressive! Let's take a closer look…

The street facade

The street facade is set back beyond a pebbled ground surface, and the floor level is slightly elevated above the ground level. This requires a single step to enter the home, creating a moment of pause that suspends one in between the atmosphere they are leaving and the innermost interior of the home that they are about to enter. This threshold moment is subtle and simple but thoughtfully articulated.

The materials on the exterior are simple. Concrete is accompanied by a metal sheet cladding that cups the upper level and provides a small protrusion of cover over the entry. The addition of the metal cladding breaks up the sheer mass of the concrete and is a fun play with volume.

The garden facade

The front facade only began to dabble with volume – the garden face facade runs with it! Voids and recesses are carved into the main volume to create interesting nooks, courtyards, and terraces. The result is a visually pleasing composition that gives rise to wonderful interstitial spaces.

This facade is also markedly more open and porous than the other. Large windows perforate the concrete shell to let ample light in and spectacular views out.

Open plan living

The interior of the home is open and spacious! The social spaces of the home are located on the lower level, while the more private spaces – such as the bedrooms – are located on the upper level.

Decoration is eschewed in favour of a clean and simple aesthetic. The white walls almost blend into the white ceiling, and the tiled floor is unassuming and similarly light.

Kitchen and dining

The kitchen opts for the minimal also. Located against the back wall, the simple white cabinetry is warmed up with timber at the lower level. The rest of the space is freed up for the simple dining arrangement that looks out over the lush backyard toward the mountains beyond.

What a wonderful kitchen! Are you after more inspiration? Fear not – we have it! Take a look at the myriad of minimalist kitchens we have compiled here!

The bedroom

Before we close the book on this tour, we'll take a quick look at one final space: the bedroom. Simple, refined, and minimal – of course – it is truly stunning space! The flooring makes a change on this level, opting for a richer natural timber which looks sophisticated and elegant against the white backdrop.
