Like anything, apartment living has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand it tends to mean limited space, and little to no outdoor area, but on the other hand a compact home can be cozy, convenient, and sociable, as you are surrounded on all sides by different and exciting people. One thing is for sure though, the kitchen in an apartment can often feel like an afterthought.

Often cramped, cluttered, and difficult to use, kitchens sometimes seem to have been shoved into a spare corner, rather than receiving the dedicated design they deserve. After all, we spend a lot of time in our kitchens, and when it's tidy and appealing it encourages us to get creative and stay healthy, instead of ordering takeout every night!

So today we're going to look at some small kitchens that look amazing, but more importantly are extremely practical, and you'll see that even in the smallest space you can have a fabulous kitchen ready for preparing a holiday dinner!

1. Sleek and modern

Just because your kitchen is small doesn't mean it has to be cramped. Just look at this super functional kitchen, with plenty of room for cooking, washing, eating, and living.

We especially like how they have offset the breakfast bar to separate the benches for preparation and eating, while the enclosed counters allow for maximum surface area. With a modern aesthetic led by bold colours this kitchen will inspire you to get creative with your dinner ideas!

2. A kitchen of contrasts

This fabulous design has a neutral colour scheme that contrasts light and dark in a harmonious balance. With a rich and sumptuous woodgrain for the cabinets balanced against the light tone of the floorboards and the off-white countertops, the overall aesthetic is timeless.

We especially love how it all comes together in the tile mosaic above the oven, which protects the wall from grease, but operates more like a feature piece. Cosy and functional, this kitchen looks marvellous.

3. Tidy and organised

Kitchens have a tendency to end up cluttered. Between new must-have appliances coming out every month, and exotic new condiments and spices showing up in our supermarkets, there's often no room left on our countertops to prepare food!

But this kitchen proves that even in a small space you can have ample storage that will allow you to keep your kitchen well stocked but neat. This is a great use of space, with everything fitting in perfectly, and believe us, you'll need every one of those cupboards.

4. A kitchen filled with light

The most important thing for a small kitchen is light. It's not just a hygiene issue, although it is extremely important to be able to keep track of just how grubby your kitchen is getting, it's also about feeling comfortable, so that you actually want to spend time in there!

With the soft beige of the cabinets, and a sleek countertop that reflects the light, the designers have opted not to put curtains on the window to allow maximum natural light to fill the room. We think you'll agree that it results in a homely, inviting room.

5. Breakfast bars

A breakfast bar is a great addition to any kitchen, you get to bathe in the rich aromas of homemade food, and it encourages you to sit down and really enjoy a meal that we often just take on the go. They can also function as extra bench space if you're preparing large amounts of food for a party.

The best part is they can be extremely simple and straightforward, as we see in this example; a minimalist wooden structure running straight from the wall, that looks wonderfully elegant.

6. Adapt to your space

When dealing with small spaces we need flexibility and adaption, and that's when it's time to call the experts! With cabinets designed specifically for the shape of the room, this corner cabinet especially is a great way to maximise storage, and a custom design will mean you don't end up cluttering the limited space.

This kitchen is extremely resourceful, making use of every spare centimetre, meaning everything is at arm's length without being untidy.

7. Bright bold colours

We've talked a lot about functionality, but design is just as important, and even the smallest kitchens can still look fantastic with a little creativity and ingenuity.

Look at the fantastic results here, where bright bold colours infuse the room with colour and energy. The vibrant red here really raises the spirit, and will have you cooking up a storm!

8. Dark and moody

Conventional wisdom may suggest that dark colours have no place in a small room, but this kitchen proves that with the right materials, and a professional's eye for design, it can look fabulous and contemporary. The contrast of the black cabinets, white glossy walls, gorgeous marble countertops, and sleek metal fittings combines to a whole that is impressive to say the least. That subtle touch of red really livens the room up, and as you can see there is no shortage of light here. So don't be afraid to break a few rules to get a fresh and exciting look!

We hope these kitchens proved that you don't need a huge apartment to get a fantastic kitchen. For more on compact living check out this elegant home!
