Today's before and after tells the story of a neglected family home that saw its fortunes reversed due to the inspired work of Light&Salt Design. Now, kids are great, but we all know the impact they can have on your previously nice home, so the owners of this particular flat decided it was time to do something before it got out of hand. The rooms were dusty and full of clutter, the furniture was dated, and the whole house was in desperate need of a little love and attention.
Design isn't the only concern here either, though it is a big one. Sometimes a renovation is also necessary to promote good health. Old homes are often a breeding ground for mould and other allergens which can cause respiratory issues in children, so it's a good idea to get to work as soon as possible, and that's exactly what they did.
So join us as we witness how this dingy flat was reborn as a fabulous modern home!
The first thing we notice here is just how dark this room is even in the middle of the day. So what's gone wrong? For starters the dark hardwood floors suck the brightness out of the room, doing nothing to maximise the natural light. Secondly this home is just filled with clutter, with mismatched furniture, and bookshelves that look like they're about to collapse under the weight of all that stuff. Now we know that it's just one of the side effects of having kids, but something really needs to be done!
Looking in the other direction, we see yet another brimming bookcase, and an unsightly cupboard. We also get a look at the halogen light fitting, which is in dire need of an upgrade. This living room really needs to make some design choices, there's no theme, the colours don't compliment each other, and the rug adds nothing.
A sunroom is a great addition to any home, but perhaps this isn't the best use of it. Sunrooms provide a great place for drinking tea, reading, enjoying the view, or more reflective activities like meditation, but there's no relaxation to be had here. We think those yellowing curtains, which mostly just serve to darken the room, need to be replaced, and we're not sure those window grills are helping much either.
And into the kitchen with its dull grey walls that don't work with the ceiling, which we'll assume was formerly some kind of white. Here we really get a sense of just how dark this home has become, and it's clear it's time for the interior decorators to come to the rescue.
What a stunning transformation! Suddenly the room is filled with light and colour, and the new lighter tone of the floor makes a huge difference. The designers have obviously noticed the excessive bookcases that used to fill this home, and have installed shelves into the wall, giving them ample storage, so important when you have kids. They've done away with all of those clashing colours, unified the palette with a simple bright woodgrain style, and added a touch of character with the gorgeous blue feature wall and light fixtures.
It's great to see them use the light coming in from the sunroom to its full potential, in fact it looks like it's bathing the whole house in sunshine! With new folding doors you can open the space up entirely, or separate the rooms without losing the view to outside, or any of that magnificent natural light.
The new light and bright feel of this place owes a lot to the new doors. With gorgeous natural wood frames, most of the doors now feature glass, which is a great way to open a home up. Here we see a glazed glass door for privacy, and even a small window on the bathroom door to allow a little light in. It's amazing how much class these elegant doors add to the entire home.
Where the old home was pokey and awkward, this new layout allows air to circulate throughout the home and freshen it up, and lets the light reach every corner. With the sunroom cleared out we can see all the way outside from here, and it looks fantastic. It's really noticeable here how much of a difference the lighter floor makes in reflecting light, sending it bouncing throughout the home.
