If you are after something a little bit different, we have five wonderful and very creative designs for you. From mirrors to corten steel, Norway to Mexico; these various designs hailing from different countries and expressing very different qualities are sure to pike your interest. They all step out of the ordinary, to offer very unique responses to their site, context and constraints. Now let's start with a delightful desert mirage, contemplative and surreal, it gives a heightened awareness of solitude and the pace of change in the desolate desert.

A desert mirrage

While Lucid Stead doesn't function as a residence, this light based installation project by Phillip K Smith is an absolute delight, drawing 400 viewers over two weekends. This architectural intervention saw the existing 70 year old homesteader shack amalgamated with mirror, LED lighting, and custom built electronic equipment. Obtaining an almost mirage like quality, the structure is enveloped in the surrounding vista. As time passes, the colours and atmosphere of the surrounding change. As does the structure itself, becoming a direct expression of it's environment.

The Dolomites, reflected

Peter Pichler Architecture was commissioned to design a structure for renting out on an apple orchard close to Bolzano, northern Italy. The site is surrounded by the spectacular Dolomite mountains. Floating on a base, above the the ground, the building evokes a sense of lightness. Mirrored glass on the west facade reflects the incredible view, allowing the structure to be absorbed in it's surroundings. This also creates a degree of privacy between the guests residence and the owners's farmhouse which is located on the site, and can be spotted in the mirrored glass from certain angles.

The Bands

Scarcity and Creativity Studio from Oslo, brought us this fantastic project; The Bands. In an abandoned fishing village in Lofoten three dilapidated buildings remained: a fisherman’s cottage, a cod liver oil production building, and a cod salting building. These three buildings were to be renovated to provide facilities for art and cultural activities, in addition to residential accommodation. The existing shell of the buildings has been retained and encased in timber bands which extend down the rocks to form a series of delightful piers or jetty's that implore the user to engage with them.

Boxes of steel

Clad in a striking corten weathering steel, the volumes of this home, designed by P+0 Arquitectura jut dramatically from the sloping site. The rusty, earthy tones of the corten steel makes the house appear to grow out of the terrain; the various volumes becoming a part of the vista. Boldly juxtaposing the organic lines of the landscape, the rigid linearity of the design somehow manages to feel entirely at place.

A house out of the ground

This 103 square meter residential project in Cancun, Mexico was designed by Sanzpont Architectura. The design responds to sustainability drivers, creating a 'bioclimatic house' that appears to have lifted up out of the site. A green roof ramps down to the ground, reconstituting the ground that the building displaces. Orientated for passive solar gains, this home addresses some very important issues regarding sustainability in our residential environments.
