In this day and age there are so many guidelines and advice about how to furnish our homes that it’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. We are exposed to so many beautiful interior designs, yet it can be difficult to execute them ourselves. We also want the space to feel personal and liveable. It’s a lot to balance!  Even we at homify have felt flustered about which techniques to try and which tendencies to avoid at one point or another. In those moments, it would have been nice to have a clear, simple guide about some basic dos and what not to do when it comes to furnishing our homes. We truly believe that anyone is capable of creating an interior to be proud of, no matter how tight his or her budget or the size of the space at hand. Today, we've constructed a list that we feel can apply to a multitude of rooms, financial circumstances, and personal preferences. Here’s how to avoid some common mistakes when furnishing a given interior space. Happy decorating!

Mix different materials

Mixing materials is a fun way to add depth and personality to the room. This room by Turnpost is an effortlessly stylish example of how great mixing materials can look. The chair consists of both leather and velvet. It certainly creates a memorable statement in this space without being too loud. The pink fabric upholstery coordinates nicely with the leather chair. The wool throw blanket adds an additional level of dimension, and the two-tone wooden bedside table completes the look. Something to note about mixing materials is that it doesn't have to take away from the level of sophistication in the design. In fact, we would say that a tastefully selection of mixed materials, as we can see in this room, actually enhances its chicness. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try mixing and matching patterns in a given space so long as their colours work together and one is subtler than the other.

Don't forget artwork

Artwork might seem like a non-essential, auxiliary element of a given interior. We would beg to differ! Art can have immense transformative properties in the look of a furnished room. Can you imagine how different this dining room would look without the three prints behind the table? The images completely tie the aesthetic of the furnishings together. The table and chairs are simple and uniform. They are brought to life in this context because they echo the forest scenes in the backdrop. The plant is now more connected to the space because it plays a role as a three-dimensional expression of what’s being communicated through the artwork. Even the crystalline light fixture has a more ethereal hint to it when it is viewed as part of the overall space. In this way, art can be a powerful connecting factor in a room.

Don't purchase in set

Though it might be tempting to take care of the furnishings for a given room in one fell swoop, we advise that you don’t purchase all furniture in the same set. It will ultimately make the room feel boring and homogenous. Varying the styles of furniture you use adds dimension and style. It compels us to be more thoughtful in our choices, and can create more of a personal connection to the interior spaces we create. Further, you might ultimately end up saving yourself some money because going with an authentic eclectic often means turning to antique shops or vintage stores for at least one statement piece in the room. This Mediterranean style bedroom for example feels natural and lived-in. From the small medal table to the lovely blue antique headboard, each piece appears to be chosen and arranged in a thoughtful manner.

Don't fear new trends

When it comes to implementing trends in interior design, it can be intimidating. Many trends require us to go outside our comfort zones in terms of what we might normally consider to by aesthetically pleasing. As going out of our comfort zones is what really helps us grow, we certainly recommend you don’t run the other way next time you see a trend that feels too far out of your element. A tip for easing yourself into new trends in design would be to anchor the room with furnishings that fit your existing tastes and try just one piece that represents the new trend. One style of design that is trending right now is minimalism. Minimalist design invites us to keep only the essentials in a given space and to ditch the rest. The result is a sense of lightness and clarity that simply can’t be beat. Another trend is going retro or mod in a room. To keep things from looking like the set of that 70s show, however, we suggest you choose one retro statement piece like this groovy modern yellow couch.

Pay attention to lighting

Much like artwork, lighting plays an important role in each room. It has the power to set the mood or completely destroy it. When it comes to choosing the right lighting for the room in question, consider the functions that room will play. Bathrooms ought to have ample lighting since this is where we groom ourselves for the day. A bedroom or living room on the other hand, should be filled with gentle, inviting lighting. In smaller spaces it’s a good idea to consider a light fixture that doesn’t take up space on the floor. These are just a few simple suggestions to help you get started on how to approach selecting the right light fixtures for you. Lighting can also add style and flair to the room. Take this country style bathroom for example. The chandelier brings an element of elegance that makes this style of design feel polished and complete.

Add personality!

At the end of the day, your home is your own personally sanctuary. You should feel comfortable here. You don’t want the place to feel stiff, like a torn out page of an interior decorating catalogue. Instead, strive to add some personal details to the home that make it your own. Place mementos on shelves, and framed photos of family and friends on the walls. Choose a decorative souvenir to bring back with you when you travel to your favourite destinations. At its core, interior design is all about expressing our creativity and feeling good about the space we occupy. So have fun with it! This living space is an astute depiction of how adding personality can bring a necessary touch of vivacity to the home. The wall is full of images and treasures that speak to the personality of the individuals who put these pieces up for display.
