The modern day brings us plenty of opportunity for design and redesign in our living rooms. Sofas, armchairs, storage, display, lighting and decoration can be a tough composition to assemble too, given that the living room -unlike the kitchen or bathroom, which require a set of fixed installations- doesn’t really have to accord to any design rules. On the other hand, this can be seen as advantageous: a blank canvas for you to work with and make your own palace of relaxation.

We’ve collected a mixture of very different designs for you to draw some inspiration from; through a variety of interior designers and architects from around Europe. Enjoy…

Modern entertainment room

Despite the light and spacious nature of this design, you can’t help but feel that this cinema style scene should be brighter. The use of grey and darker colours, around the floor and bottom half of the room, help to absorb a lot of the natural light intake and prevent garish brightness; aiding to the habits with those of us with a voyeuristic disposition -watching too much TV!

The modern layout of the room is also very admirable: combining just a few large items of furniture for good, minimalist effect. For more great ideas, have a look at our idea book ’living room ideas’

The simple modern bedroom

See, not bulky in the slightest! The cupboards above the beds almost vanish into the wall and look pretty attractive, in addition the hight of them won’t detract from the storage space you would normally lose; given their shallow depth. The installed wooden bed and rear stand blend well with the floor and allow for electrical wiring to be neatly stored away too -practical and easy on the eye.

Living room storage

I think it’s fair to say that this living room looks singular. The living room storage used here is really the feature of the room too; breaking us the routine white throughout and adding a very unique element to the structure of the entire room. Tones of a library seep through in the design, especially with the integration of the black metal of the stairwell and white capital support. Even though there is a lot of decoration and furniture in this sitting room, you can help but admire the spacious feel of it: allowing the resident to sit back on the couch and admire the spectacular elements from a far.

Modern living room seating

Many of us like our special armchair: one that we have used for years and is moulded into our exact shape. 8 Block Architecture have put the finishing touches on this scene to good effect; making good use of space and using a feature article (the armchair) to put a twist in the tone of the room.

modern furniture with a twist

UdA, an Italian architects firm, have put the finishing touches on this living room design with extreme contrast in tone. A dark interior -silken paint, dark wood flooring and arched, sunken windows- with a loud set of orange furniture. The furniture is certainly eye-catching and leaves a lasting impression. A good idea to liven up a dark and mellow scene.

Multipurpose living room

This design incorporates something from many areas of the home: a living room, dining room, bar, library and wine cellar. An interesting (and ultimately unique) design that is homely and practical. Why stick to the classic parameters of living room design with the options we are presented with today?
