Stuff piles up in your home – there’s just no getting around it. Clothes get left around, dishes pile up in the sink, and dirt and dust settle on every available surface. Even if you regularly clean your home, there are some areas and surfaces that require a deeper, more thorough cleaning. Cleaning your home may seem like a fairly self explanatory thing, but when it comes down to actually doing it, where should you even start? What equipment should you use for the best cleaning? What should you do with your furniture? And which things in your home require the most attention?

Today on homify, we have created an Ideabook that will help you with just that. We have put together a list of the best ways to deep clean your home, and after you have finished reading and tidying up yourself, you and your home will be left feeling completely immaculate.

Use a steam cleaner

Let’s start off this Ideabook with advice on how to clean the largest surface in your home – your floors. As I’m sure you know, you can always use a mop or a cloth to clean your floors, but these things just tend to move the dirt and dust from one corner to the next without really picking anything up. Steam cleaners, on the other hand, get much better results, and with much less effort. Steam cleaners come in a variety of styles, shapes, sizes, and strength. There are steam cleaners specifically made for tile or hardwood, or you can get a steam cleaner designed for carpeting. There are even some models that allow you to vacuum and steam clean simultaneously. There are countless benefits to using a steam cleaner. They’re eco-friendly since there are no chemicals involved, they use heat to disinfect or sanitize nearly all surfaces, steam evaporates quickly, so your surfaces will dry faster, these cleaners can get into those hard to reach cracks and crevices, and they remove hard substances like ground in wax, glue, or gum.

Since steam cleaners can be rather expensive, we suggest investing in the type that will clean the largest surface area in your home. So, for example, if most of your flooring is hardwood, don’t buy a carpet steam cleaner. And what’s more, you don’t even need detergent to use a steam cleaner – using water alone can do the job.

Clean the rug

Carpeting is definitely something you can’t ignore when going on a mission to deep clean your home. So, since we talked up steam cleaners so much just now, we can only recommend that you use them to clean your carpet or area rug. Nothing gets deep down into those fibres and gets rid of dirt, dust, and bugs better than a steam cleaner. Some rugs can be hand washed by placing a towel underneath and using a sponge to clean, or you can be green about it and use an eco-friendly cleaning solution made of vinegar, salt, baking soda, and some borax, while others may be washed in the washing machine. But you should be careful to read the label on your rug to make sure that whichever deep cleaning treatment you use, your rug fibres won’t fall apart.

We suggest you deep clean your carpet or area rugs at least once a year. This will ensure your carpet fibres stay fresh, leaving your home feeling as clean as a whistle.

Wash your curtains

There are certain, elusive areas of the home that we just don’t clean very well. Not because we’re lazy, but simply because we forget about these things altogether, and curtains definitely fall under this category. Curtains attract and trap a lot of dust and various particles in the air and absorbing all kinds of smells from around the home, such as cooking aromas or cigarette smoke. Depending on the material of your curtains, you could simply wash them in your washing machine and be done with it. But if you have more delicate curtains, such as lace curtains, you are better off hand washing them with a little detergent and water. And guess what? You also have the option of using the multifunctional steam cleaner to wash your curtains!

Move some furniture around

Deep cleaning your home isn’t just all about washing every surface. In order to have a pristine, fresh feeling home, you need to regularly move your furniture around. This may sound strange, but it couldn’t be truer. The ancient art of Feng Shui teaches us that rearranging furniture releases negative energy from the home, creating a more Zen atmosphere. While this holds a lot of truth, the other benefit of moving furniture is that you are finally able to clean those hard to reach places you couldn’t access before. In addition, regularly moving your furniture means that your home is less likely to succumb to fade stains. When your couch sits on top of an area rug, for example, and you haven’t moved this rug in years, chances are when you do finally move it, you’ll notice the area of the rug that was underneath the couch is much darker than the rest of the rug. Why? Because the sun, cleaning products, and everyday wear and tear discolour your carpet, but the area underneath the couch are not affected by these things. Thus, rearranging your furniture will hinder this.

Throw stuff out

It may come as a no-brainer, but when deep cleaning your home, you need to throw out all of your unwanted accessories. Every single accessory or piece of furniture in your home is a giant dust magnet, so the less stuff you have to collect these nasty particles, the better. We understand that you have all of these knick knacks because you want to make your home feel cozy and welcoming, but you may be doing the opposite by making your home cluttered and a haven to allergy inducing dust mites. If no one ever uses that that armchair in the living room, or if you just really don’t like that painting you have on the wall, just throw it out. A space with less And with less clutter in your home, it will feel much more spacious, airier, and lighter than ever before.

Take care of your woodwork

The last thing we’re going to mention in this Ideabook is how to take care of your woodwork. In order to keep your wood glossy and smooth, regular cleanings are a must. To clean the finish on your wooden furniture, you can use warm water and mild dish soap. The water won’t harm your wood as long as you are careful not to soak it. Using an old toothbrush for woodwork with intricate carvings is a great way to clean in those little cracks, and just use a soft cloth to wipe off the dirt and dry off any residual moisture. After you clean your woodwork, the best way to protect the finish is to use a high quality wax or oil. Apply a thin coat according to the label, wait about five minutes, and then wipe it off with a clean rag. You’ll see the shine return to your finish that will last for months.
