When it comes to choosing the perfect style for the heart of your home (aka the kitchen), there is a myriad of options to consider. But today we’d like to focus on an old favourite: the rustic style.

Rustic is a design style focusing on the simple and old-fashioned. It usually features warm wooden tones and wrought-iron hardware. And even though it is popular in many log cabins, it also has a place in modern-day homes.

So, how can you ensure your kitchen flaunts that warm, welcoming and slightly rural look? By taking note of these 10 features that can be found in the majority of (if not all) rustic kitchens.

1. The rustic kitchen: Autumn colours

Take the neutral colour palette favoured by modern kitchens and give it a warmer tint – oranges, browns, yellows, etc. But don’t discount the natural tones like greens and blues.

The main idea is that your rustic kitchen must give off a nice, warm and inviting feeling. Thus, use the colours of natural materials like stone, sand and clay to inspire you.

2. The rustic kitchen: Rustic woods

Forget about sleek steel – hickory, alder and cherry woods are the main stars of the rustic kitchen. And so is pine, which is a great choice for your cabinetry, butcher block countertops, kitchen island and flooring.

Fortunately, rustic woods differ in colour (ranging from deep browns to warm beiges), meaning you are bound to find the perfect option to enhance your rustic kitchen’s autumn palette.

3. The rustic kitchen: Hardwood floors

Although many kitchen styles feature tiled flooring, you’re going to want to stick with hardwood if the rustic design is what you’re after. And ensure your choices have a non-glossy, natural finish.

Even though any kind of wood can work, pine is the number one choice for some rustic charm. But keep in mind that pine can be quite soft, meaning you might end up with slightly dented floors if you have an active household.

4. The rustic kitchen: Natural materials

When it comes to a rustic kitchen, it’s all about retaining a natural look. That is why hardwood floors reign supreme over tile or linoleum. But of course wood is not your only option.

Other natural materials that have also become firm favourites in rustic designs include stone (a great option for kitchen countertops), wrought-iron (terrific for those pot racks, recipe book stands and baker’s racks), and clay and terracotta.

5. The rustic kitchen: Exposed beams

Not really a requirement, but if you want to go all the way and you have the option to include exposed wooden ceiling beams in your kitchen, we say go for it!

Luckily, support beams and exposed buttresses can be added for a minimal amount of money – if you opt for the prefabricated fake choice, that is. Prefabricated fake support beams look exactly like the real thing, but aren’t meant to be load-bearing. Most of them are three-sided and hollow and install very much like prefab crown moulding.

To do your part for the environment, we recommend looking for faux beams made from reclaimed wood.

6. The rustic kitchen: Bring the outdoors inside

As the rustic design goes hand-in-hand with the rural look, bringing the outside in is a great way to add some rustic flair. So, how about installing cabinetry and hardwood flooring made from wood in your surrounding area?

Does your kitchen have a nice view of the flora outside? Then try and match the interior paint colour to the flowers you can see while in the kitchen (deep reds, greens and browns are most popular).

homify hint: If you want to add a touch of country style to your rustic kitchen, include lighter blues, oranges and yellows in your colour palette.

7. The rustic kitchen: Lots of natural lighting

Speaking of bringing the outside in, ensure your rustic kitchen has as much natural light streaming indoors as possible. Ever considered a skylight?

Of course adding a skylight is not possible for all budgets, so the next best thing would be to opt for lots of oversized windows. Bay windows are also a great touch for the rustic theme. And a great, big door that opens up onto the garden? Priceless!

In terms of lighting fixtures, choices can range from upscale wrought-iron candle chandeliers to custom designs made from natural material like driftwood.

8. The rustic kitchen: Appliances

Of course we’re not expecting you to include appliances made from wood, which is why it is possible to incorporate stainless steel finishes into a rustic kitchen. The key to making this work, however, is to surround those modern-looking appliances with lots of Old World charm like terracotta tiles, wooden countertops, etc.

For a more authentic look, try finding retro appliances. Modern manufacturers are quite adept at making retro appliances that look like they’ve been transported through time, yet are perfect for modern-day needs (like a brand-new fridge that looks like it came from 1950).

9. The rustic kitchen: The right sinks

There’s no getting around this one: if you want to have a real rustic kitchen, you’re going to have to invest in a farmhouse sink. These large, deep sinks are perfect for handling loads of dishes (meaning they are quite practical), but the real thing is their unique design – that exposed front panel is what sets them apart from modern-day choices. So popular, in fact, that they’ve even been used in other kitchen design styles like contemporary and Scandinavian.

Granite, soapstone, iron and copper are popular material choices for farmhouse sinks.

10. The rustic kitchen: The furnishings

The key element to tying your kitchen’s rustic look together is furnishings – and here, wood is also king.

A very popular choice among rustic lovers is furniture made from reclaimed barn wood. Log benches, stools and tables can also be a great touch for a rustic cabin, yet can be a bit much for some people’s tastes.

Our recommendation is to find a dining table that’s simple and sturdy and made from good-quality wood (like pine). The same goes for your breakfast bar stools and/or dining chairs. And note that rustic furnishings don’t waste time with heavily adorned designs – plain and simple is gold!
