The garden is probably the area of our properties that we couldn't be more proud of. And it's no surprise – it is an open space outdoors that allows us to recreate the beauty of Mother Nature using all kinds of plants, shrubs, flowers, and trees. However, to get to that point of pride, you need to invest a lot of time in your garden's design, configuration, and construction. And above all, more time and patience for maintenance. You even have to contemplate new ideas and possibilities to implement in the garden.

If you are disciplined in these tasks, the result will undoubtedly amaze you. And for that task, we here at homify have compiled a list of six ideas for your garden, so that you can add things to your garden that may have otherwise not crossed your mind.

So, without further ado, let's take a look at what you can do to jazz up your garden and set it apart from the rest!

Tiny details

First of all, not everything that you have in your garden has to be big. Not all of us are blessed with a large property, and some of us choose to garden in a greenhouse. Whichever the case, smaller garden spaces deserve smaller accessories. You can achieve the same, or perhaps an even better arrangement through the use of smaller accessories than you could in a large garden.

Dealing with smaller decorative elements also enlarges your garden space, and the decor sticks out much more through their little details. Small plant pots, vases, or ornaments are great for this effect.

A path through the garden

Garden paths not only mark the route through your garden, but they also give your garden a sense of completeness, dimension, and charm. When it comes to garden paths, the possibilities area almost endless, meaning you can create a walkway to your oasis in any style that suits your home's exterior.

Modern and minimalist homes favor the concrete, stone, and slate and brick walkways, while rustic, classic, or eclectic fall in line with mortar and pebble, natural stone, and mulch surround walkways. Here, we have a beautiful stone walkway fashioned in a winding and linear way that accentuates the modern and classy charm of the property.

Show your adventurous side

Are you tired of ordinary garden accessories and layouts? Then a vertical garden may be the perfect thing for you. Vertical gardens create a unique environment that becomes the center of attention and attraction when fully grown in. They really make you feel as if you are one with nature with all of the surrounding foliage and flowers.

They aren't just aesthetically pleasing, either. These gardens conceal harsh and battered walls and are great if you want more privacy from your neighbours. Vertical gardens are also ideal for those of us who do not have a lot of ground space for plants.

Symmetry

One important part of any garden design is symmetry. The use of symmetry – or even asymmetry for that matter – helps to determine the style and feel of the garden. When we think of symmetrical gardens, we tend to think of them as being bilaterally symmetrical, meaning mirror duplicates on both sides. These types of gardens tend to be calming, as they create a balance within us with their replicated features.

That is not to say, though, that symmetrical designs are the only type to choose from. While symmetrical gardens are solid and unmoving, asymmetrical gardens lead the eye in different directions and create a sense of flow with their movement. Japanese Zen gardens are the quintessential asymmetrical garden.

Play with space

We consider every tiny nook and cranny of the garden just as important as the rest of it. It is best to utilize every square centimeter of space that you have. Take advantage of any small corners and place a small bench on the border – that way you fill up space and have a nice seating area for relaxation or socialization.

Adding a garden bench also allows you to showcase a little more of your own personal style. Choosing a darker wood for  your bench boasts sophistication and elegance, while lighter tones are more inviting and homey. Not only wood colour choice, but cushion colour choice accents these notions, as well. Neutral or darker shades accent modern homes, while lighter shades complement more rustic styles.

Take advantage of your natural design

If you are the type of person who does not enjoy weekly or routine maintenance, it does not mean you have to give up on the joy of gardening. All you have to do is to look for plant species that do not require much care. Taking advantage of local species will always mean that your garden will have an easier time acclimating to your individual climate, as the plant already comes from that environment. Using local plants also means that you are not introducing foreign species and thus disrupting your area's ecosystem.
