Hanam is located next to Seoul, the South Korean capital. It is a part of Gyeonggi Province – easily the most populous region of the country – and is twinned with Shah Alam, Selangor. Hanam’s modern skyline is dominated by towering residential and commercial buildings. But as you edge past all these and come closer to the outskirts of the city, you become privy to a very different experience.

Suddenly, the once peaceful nature of the area reveals itself in front of your eyes. The modern villa that we are going to visit today is set in a similarly picturesque surrounding close to the city’s edges.

Exterior of the house

The two storey house stands on a plot of 820 sq metres. The façade, clad largely in concrete and accented with wood, is the epitome of modern design.

The front yard is decorated with a few deciduous trees. A narrow garden path made of dry laid pavers leads up to the main entrance. Let's step inside…

Hallway

Asian homes insist on building a welcoming hallway. According to the traditions of the land, an inviting hall fills the entire home with positive energy. If you have plans to redecorate your hallway in style, you should take a closer look at this one!

It is gracefully designed with a sundeck and stone flooring. A small water feature – decorated with vases, embedded lighting and pea pebbles – adorns the centre of the hall. Equally spectacular is the wood-panelled wall, which is also stylised with multiple decorative items.

Tea room and lounge

As a part of entertaining the guests at home, many Korean homes continue to perform the age old tea ceremony, also known as darye. Tea harvesting season is still celebrated with much merriment across the country.

The lounge in front of you is used both for engaging guests in tea rituals, as well as having a hearty chat in between. Large glass paned windows effortlessly connect the interior with the charming garden outside. Glazed flooring increases the charm of the interior, and prominent pendant lighting adds harmony to the overall décor.

A wall panel, separating the narrow corridor from the living room, is another stylish addition to this space. It induces a variation of colour. Besides, the decorative features embellishing the shelves augment the beauty of the ambience.

Corridor and staircase

Like any classical Korean structure, this house makes extensive use of wood in its interior. The dark flooring creates a striking contrast with the white walls and ceiling.

The railing is decorated with multiple artworks. Windows and ceiling-mounted recessed lighting keep the space bright and comfortable.

Bathroom

The bathroom has a high ceiling and skylight installation. Like other parts of the building it is designed with wood flooring, laminated cabinets and a stone countertop.

It has more than one mirror, which gives it a spacious feel. A vase full of peace lilies is capable of keeping the interior air refreshed for long periods of time.

Patio and garden

From this vantage point you can see a glimpse of the sundeck and the garden beyond. The long deck area covers a large portion of the front façade. Concrete trellis, supported by large pillars, creates a canopy of sorts on the garden path.

A rock bed has been created in a small space between the garden path and hallway. This seems to be a home of much happiness and peace.
