Decluttering your home can be an overwhelming and time-consuming task, therefore I have come up with 5 tips on how to declutter your home that will break down the process and make it easier for you. This blog will act as your guide to easily declutter your space stress-free.

Although you may find it hard to get rid of the items in your home, decluttering your space comes with multiple benefits that make your life easier such as, fewer items to organize and clean on a frequent basis, it will alleviate some stress as you won’t be overwhelmed every time you look into a room and see a pile of unorganised items and you can utilise your new space wisely for more important things.

When it comes to choosing which items to throw away, don’t give yourself time to dwell on it and get wrapped up in all the little memories that item may hold. Instead, ask yourself is this item adding value to your life? Do you use it on a regular basis or are you likely to use it within the next year? If the answer is no then throw it away.

Many people spend too much time focusing on one item and end up trying to convince themselves that they need that item. Doing this will only slow down the process and make it harder for you to throw things away. In order to avoid this, give yourself a time limit to decide what you’re going to do with each item, for example, 30 seconds per item.

Another tactic you can use to make the process easier for you is the 12-12-12 challenge. This challenge consists of you throwing 12 items away, donating 12 items and putting 12 items back. Following this rule will ensure that you are only keeping the items you really want.

Whilst you are in the process of decluttering your home, make sure you don’t forget to keep on top of the waste you’re accumulating as you don’t want to end up with 10 bin bags of rubbish sitting outside your house for weeks.

As well as this, you don’t want to get yourself into the trap of going back through the items you have decided to throw away and end up putting half of them back.

A good way around this is to hire a skip that you can easily put your waste into, this then gets collected at a time that’s convenient for you so you don’t have to worry about making multiple trips to the tip.

Stone skip and grab hire

offer multiple skip sizes so you can find one tailored to your project.

Rather than trying to tackle big piles of clutter and overwhelming yourself, start with small sections and work your way up to the bigger ones. As well as this, focus on one room at a time and don’t shift your focus until that room is finished.

If you do find yourself becoming overwhelmed and not being able to complete each section thoroughly, try to only work in small bursts at a time. For example, try doing 30 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Only working for 30 minutes means you can intensely focus on a particular section without burning out, as well as this, you are ensuring that you are giving yourself enough breaks.

Once you have decided on the items you are keeping, don’t put them back in an unorganised manner as this will make all the work you completed pointless as you will end up cluttering the space again.

Creating

storage solutions

such as cupboards or boxes will allow you to organise the leftover items and keep them in specific places to avoid more clutter. When choosing storage solutions, give yourself a limit to how much you can fit into them.

Once you have reached the limit for a particular storage solution, go back through it and throw out any old items you no longer need, remember to be strict with yourself when doing this. This will then free up space for your new items and ensure that you are not getting back into the routine of keeping clutter.

If all else fails, it’s always good to enlist the help of a friend. Sometimes getting another point of view on things can make it easier for you to make harder decisions. If your friend has never seen a particular item, then it may be a sign that you don’t use it and therefore no longer need it.

If you have a large area you need to declutter then getting a friend to tackle this for you and then holding onto a few items they feel you may want to keep will make it easier for you as you will only have to choose between a few items. Furthermore, if you have a big pile of clutter then the chances are you probably don’t even remember most of the items within it, therefore making it easier for you as you can’t get hung up on something you forgot about.

Now that I have gone through my top 5 tips on how to declutter your home, it is your turn to put these to use when taking on the project of decluttering your space.

When taking on this task, remember to start small to avoid overwhelming yourself. I would also like to reiterate the point of providing a good waste solution for yourself as this will ensure you don’t end up with having the same amount of clutter just in a new location.
