MARUSYS

Marusys

Marusys, a growing global IT company, desires to include more values to their new working space. Five ground floors of the sixstory building are exclusively zoned according to different characteristics. “Welcome zone” located on the second floor inspires creativity by sharing the space with the local community. “Working zone” which is spread over three floors—the third floor to the fifth floor—provides comfort to enhance long-term productivity which is directly related to longer hours spent at the office. Finally, “Meeting & Supporting zone” on the sixth floor holds large scale events and overall management for the entire company.

“Welcome zone” on the second floor is the cultural community space that is used as the library, meeting room, cafe, and the exhibition area. In order to divide or connect various programs, there are three axes: “Revolving wall”, “Bookshelf wall” and “Brick wall”. “Revolving wall” functions as the central axis connecting two entrances, which are: the main entrance linked with the outside stairway and the opposite entrance linked with main core hall. The overall space is consistent with the central axis and the two orthogonal axes added to it.

“Bookshelf wall” functions as the regional community library and exhibition space which is allocated on the main entrance facing the first orthogonal axis. This bookshelf layer visually expands the space beyond the layer and controls the density of the space.

“Revolving wall”, as it is self-explanatory, functions as a flexible divider, which distinctively or loosely separates the space and dynamically controls the function of the lobby space. This movable wall also exhibits major products that represents the company. Beyond the wall, there is the “island meeting space” that works for diverse layers of communication. This space with three conference rooms surrounded by eaves and toenmaru—a traditional Korean intermediate space—performs as the 'house within house' concept. Each rooms can control its focus level for various meetings from highly focused to unconstrained by differentiating the openness of the sliding door.

The interaction of physical and psychological features of the library, conference rooms, cafe and display area composing the

“Welcome zone” provides a high synergy effect and creates diverse scenes by overlapping various programs. At the Welcome zone” with ambiguous boundaries, “Brick wall” visually presents stability through a solid volume and separates the rooms that should be private from outside noise and opened field of vision.

“Working zone” is located from the third floor to the fifth floor where most of the substantive work of the company is being operated. Devices are usually tested within individual spaces, in other words, flexible storage spaces and facilities allowed for each individual spaces became a huge basis for creating pleasantness. To allocate areas effectively, service spaces such as the conference room, office equipment areas, storage spaces, tea-making areas are composed in a compact module on the central way to the elevator core while work stations are located around the window area where the natural lighting and ventilation system is highly effective. The tea-making space, which is comparatively public among service spaces, is located on the front of the whole area and is designed like a small lounge to make comfortable moods for the entire “Working zone”.

“Meeting & Supporting zone” on the sixth floor is where working and resting areas coexist with the CEO room, large conference room, lounge, mini canteen, and the milking area. Each area applied with different characteristics is divided by a translucent 'hallow wall'. This 'hallow wall' is a glass wall standing around the central pocket place with a rear screen film attached. The wall reduces mutual interference and opens the view. It also enables diverse lighting or beam projection effects. Illuminating barrisol ceiling product and mirrors are used to lighten the weight of the space in order to solve the stuffiness caused by the lower ceiling height compared to other floors
