본인은 지속적으로 오래된 궁에 대한 사진을 찍고 전시를 진행하였습니다. 나의 주된 작업인 적외선 필터를 이용한 적외선 촬영을 통해 나온 궁의 모습은 늘 보았던 익숙한 풍경과 다르게, 새롭

고 아름답게 보입니다. 2016년 LG 기업과의 협업으로 서울의 4대 궁중 왕후들이 기거하였던 궁을 촬영할 기회가 생기게 되었고, 황후가 왕궁에서 보아왔던 궁의 모습에 대해 생각하게 되었습

니다.

이 나라의 왕후는 어떤 느낌으로 이곳을 바라보았을까? 분명 지금 시대의 사람들이 바라보는 풍경의 느낌과는 달랐을 것입니다. 나에게 다가온 왕후의 느낌은 사치스러움에 화려함이나 부유하

기에 여유로움보다는 이 궁에 갇혀 유일하게 바라볼 수 밖에 없었던 많은 문과 통로로 이루어진 쓸쓸함 이였습니다. 그녀들이 바라보는 관점으로 실내에서 바라본 창과 문을 통해 보는 밖, 외부

에서 바라보는 그녀들의 궁들.. 그녀들은 누구나 가질 수 없는 것을 누리며 살았지만, 넓은 궁의 일부만을 사용하며, 왕의 통제 속에 있었습니다. 그녀들의 단절된 시선이 궁 안 곳곳이 묻어있고,

그녀들의 시선을 따라 궁은 조각조각 나눠져 나의 사진에 쓸쓸하게 담깁니다.

적외선 촬영의 기법은 빛의 많은 양중에 극히 일부분만 담아내는 표현하는 기법입니다. 모든 빛을 받아들이지 않고 필터를 통해 걸려진 빛으로 아름다운 세상이 되도록 담아내는 나의 시선과 그

녀들의 시선이 닮아 있지는 않은지 생각합니다.

나의 작업의 마무리는 찬란한 파란색과 핑크, 혹은 금빛에 가까운 갈색과 회색의 조화로운 조합입니다. 작업을 마주했을 때는, 그 색상과 형상의 화려함과 찬란함에 감탄하지만, 사실은 몇 가지

빛의 색으로만 이루어진 단조롭고 차가운 모습을 가지고 있습니다. 왕후들의 삶이 아름답고 화려한 삶과 같이 보이지만, 그녀들의 시선은 엄격한 규율과 단조로운 삶으로 차갑게 얼어버린, 어쩌

면 아슬아슬하고 위험한 삶을 살지 않았을까 합니다. 궁을 바라보는 나의 시선이 왕후들의 시선과 함께, 찬란하고 아름답지만 차갑고 쓸쓸한 궁을 드러내며, 아름다움과 차가움의 중간쯤을 살고

있는 많은 이에게 어떠한 의미로 비질지 의문을 던집니다.

I’ve spent years documenting historical palaces of South Korea, resulting in handful of exhibitions in the past few years. Previously I’ve captured them in the form of

infrared photography, to give a different perspective on otherwise very common places. To us Koreans anyway. However when I was contacted by LG corporation to

photography four palaces of Seoul, specifically the rooms where the Queens of the past called their home, I decided I wanted a new perspective. A perspective of that

of the Queens.

How it must’ve these palaces look to an Queen? When they lived in such places in such times? She must’ve felt something a lot different than what we feel when we

look at these palace structures. When I imagined an Queen sitting in one of these rooms, the impression I’ve got wasn’t a feeling of relaxation nor a luxurius life. I saw a

loneliness. Looking at the outside world only through these windows and doors. She had everything, so people thought, but she was confined to these little parts of the

palaces, where the emperor had control over everything she did. Her eyes toward the world are blocked by the walls, only seeing as far as the architecture would allow

her to. I’ve collected pieces of her views, following her footsteps, and captured the images in her eyes.

Infrared photography is done by allowing only certain parts of lights into a camera. Creating beauty with filtered lights, I think its method has something in common with

a perspective of an Queen. Both see something special within limited information.

The end result of such photography that I do is a combination of vivid colors- blue, pink, or golden brown and gray, all coming together to create eye catching gradient.

When people see my work they first notice these colors, but looking closer, they realise it’s made of only a handful of colors, and each colors show an emotion that is

rather cold. Likewise, while life of an Queens might have been considered something luxurius, something colorful, life she really had could’ve been something cold,

something monotone, as she was stuck in a place without much freedom and repeating routines. My eyes are alinged with that of an Queen as I take these pictures.

Seeing it shine in beauty, all the while also feeling cold and lonely. For many of us who are living a life in such complexity, I present these photographs and ask a

question. How do you feel?
