Kindergarten Angel
Date : 1999 ~ 2002 Location (city, country): Anyang, Korea
The site is located between the boundaries of two cities. It has been a deserted small island
from the cities by division of administrative district with rapid changes of residential environment. The island is surrounded by high-rise apartments. Since these buildings are children's home, we want the kindergarten to be the polis of kids.
We decided to make our complex to be a different place compare to the surroundings. The triangle shape of the site and the visual structure by around those buildings gave us good allusion to start with.
The kindergarten is divided into three areas such as individual classes, public space, and garden. The individual classes have given to fixed regular forms but with free circulation, light, and view. We implied public character to the irregular form which was left from fixed regular form and had put garden between spaces. The trees and ivy vines will call birds and insects that would be friends with kids. The interior is finished by the materials of plywood of pine tree and stucco, and the exterior finishing are bricks, exposed concrete and granite. We used the plywood of white birch for the furniture and the plywood of pine tree for the doors and walls, which were our intention to have children, could connect these materials with the trees in the garden with idea of the 'unity'.
