Through House - Eunjae's Stone Wall Residence

Almost a year ago, a design work was awarded by same age couple. As they left city and moved back to home town, they needed expansion for their old thatch house in home town. Their old house was located at the entrance of traditional village known as Geumdangsil village in Yecheon, Kyungsangbuk-do. They asked a design of house matching with existing traditional village and two requirements. First one was an exhibition space which can be utilized as community portal by villagers as well. The second one was a small library for children of village.

Geumdangsil village is a traditional village known as one of Korean historical ten shelters with 600 years of history and culture. The village has very old residences of Chosun Dynasty and old residences are connected by a maze of stone fences. However, there exist some abandoned earth house, shake-up thatch, western style house and slate roof, cement and metal roof tile cottages as well. My design for this project was started by looking for architectural language to resolve such a mixed situation of time and spaces.

The volume of expansion was defined by existing thatch house, the approaching manner to house yard, orientation, and the boundary of stone fences. The expansion volume was specified by functional requirement into two areas of exhibition/community portal and children library. Internal and external linkages of spaces and security of areas are implemented by surrounding shape of space and volume separation.

The exhibition space encountered as approaching Geumdangsil village was designed to express the shape of stone fences and the beekeeping content of exhibition metaphorically in massing and the changes of light and shade in exhibition hall. The porch was designed on the southern part of children library to produce pleasant natural environment for internal space of library and to be utilized as open space for various outdoor activities of children.

Albeit small exclusive area, visual and spatial scalability and continuity were secured by the concept of Kan in traditional architecture, the diversity of internal and external spaces and the exposure of sloped ceiling. Furthermore, material and elevation matching with surrounding environment were composed by re-interpretation of traditional external factors and trace of time formation in the village.

Villagers agreed the will of the couple in the pursuit of life, extending the private sector to share and live together. The external shape was completed by stones and gravels in the vicinity, stone walling with straws, courtyard lay gravel, roof-line thatching through co-works of sympathetic villagers. Remaining external spaces will be filled with such co-works.

Wish these spaces to be utilized freely by children of village and shared easily by villagers for conversation and communication as intended from the beginning by this couple. Hope this residence to be soaked into Geumdangsil village naturally by layers of time as like layering stone wall.
